南极洲 (nán jí zhōu): Antarctica

Antarctica is the coldest and windiest continent on Earth, and almost no one lives there permanently.

Last winter, my uncle went to Antarctica as a member of a scientific expedition and worked there for a full eight months.

In geography class, the teacher pointed at the map and told us that Antarctica is covered by a thick layer of ice, with an average thickness of more than 1,500 meters.

As the global climate warms, the glaciers in Antarctica are melting faster and faster, which worries many scientists.

Every year, some brave tourists travel to Antarctica on icebreakers just to see that pure white world with their own eyes.
